It is a cardiovascular manifestation and a risk factor. The blood pressure gets elevated and crosses the normal values. Individuals may become victims of hypertension at any age and at any time.

Hypertension can be of two types - Idiopathic or Primary or Essential hypertension in which cause is unknown and secondary hypertension in which cause is known. Once the cause is corrected blood pressure comes back to normal.

Secondary hypertension is caused due to some other illness or clinical condition like pregnancy, thyroid or kidney disorder. However, Doctors attribute Primary hypertension as a result of genetic predisposition.

If your parents had high blood pressure at a certain age, naturally the siblings would also be at a risk of contracting this disorder in future. To live life with high blood pressure is risky for any individual because this disorder hardly shows any peculiar or noticeable signs and symptoms.

The victim simply complains of headache, sleep problems or palpitation, if uncontrolled, it can result into serious consequences like, damage of delicate organs, heart, eyes or kidneys that receive the blood flow may also cause haemorrhage and even death.

An appreciable bunch of people are falling prey to hypertension these days on account of stress, lack of sound sleep, unhealthy food hobbits like consumption of sodium rich diet, high alcohol intake, obesity, lack of exercise, family history, sedentary life style and many more. Lastly, a hypertensive patient needs to have a sound sleep.

Blood pressure needs to be measured regularly by means of an instrument called sphygmomanometer. The normal blood pressure means when the values are at 120/90. The upper figure is called systolic blood pressure and the lower figure is called diastolic pressure.

The systolic blood pressure means the force put on the blood vessels when heart beats and pushes blood out of it where as diastolic blood pressure means the pressure exerted on blood vessels when the heart relaxes.

Certain key factors can bring blood pressure back to normal. One should exercise at least for 45 minutes every day in the morning, reduce the intake of fried and salty diet, reduce alcohol intake, minimise fats, avoid processed foods, cut sugar intake, monitor cholesterol levels increase fibre, fruits and vegetables. These dietary changes need to be made in time before it is too late.

Intake of medicines to treat hypertension should be carried as per the advice of doctor only. It is advisable not to miss or stop these medicines all of a sudden without doctor’s advice. These medications have other adverse effects like diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal issues.

A survey regarding the medication prescribed for hypertensive was conducted by BDS II Year students, Sandeep Singh Nirwan, Kanishka Jhorar, Nikita Singh, Harshita Patni, Diyansh verma, Trapti Sikarawar of Rajasthan Dental College Jaipur.

After interviewing more than 100 patients it was concluded that 70 % patients take medication regularly and the rest stop medication as soon as their BP comes back to normal without doctor’s advice.

Last but not the least; having blood pressure means a risk factor which can create problems in future. It should not be neglected.

Surprisingly, keeping the present scenario in view young generation is becoming obese on account of sedentary life style, intake of non fibrous food, processed foods intake and other fatty foods which is a matter of concern and individuals are falling prey to hypertension.
